BACK TO BASICS SELF CARE PRACTICES

For the times when life feels completely overwhelming.

Here are some self-care practices that I like to call getting back to basics for those times when life feels completely overwhelming. Your rescue remedy awaits.

  1. Take an Epsom salt bath with aromatherapy oils.

A nurturing relaxation recipe to soothe the soul & drain away negative energy to leave you feeling refreshed & renewed. Fill a bath & add some Epsom salts, mix in a good 10 drops of rose geranium pure aromatherapy oil & 10 drops of lavender oil. This combination is like magic & will soothe your cares away. If you don’t have a bath you can still benefit from the magic of this aromatherapy blend by putting a few drops of each in the corner of the shower. Let the fragrant steam permeate your senses & visualise all the negative energy washing away as the water cascades down your body.

  1. Soothing Music

Play calming relaxation music, music that soothes your soul. My favourite is the spa radio channel on Pandora. Music has a powerful healing effect to change the vibrational frequency of your body at a molecular level.

  1. Light some candles

The calming effect of candlelight can be a simple yet sacred tool to help reduce stress. The gentle glow it creates helps to ease and soothe the mind & soul.

Create a cosy, nurturing atmosphere by lighting a few well-placed candles in your home. Adding a candle here & there will create softness in your room, which will instantly make it feel warm & welcoming, perfect for when you’re feeling overwhelmed. So, if you haven’t already, bring the tranquil & restorative light of candles into your life.

  1. Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is most efficient when inhaling essential oils from a tissue, diffusing them in a vaporiser, or adding them to your bathwater. The aroma sends a signal, directly through our senses, which in turn influences our emotions. Aromatherapy can help to lift depression, soothe irritable nerves and generally encourage a better state of mind. This is why essential oils have such a powerful effect on our moods and general state of mind. Relaxing oils such as lavender, sweet marjoram, clary sage, sandalwood, frankincense & ylang ylang work by stimulating a neuro-chemical called serotonin that is naturally produced by the body to help relaxation & induce sleep. A dream remedy when feeling completely overwhelmed.

  1. Chamomile tea

Soothe your nerves with a cup of chamomile tea. Research has shown that chamomile is not only relaxing, but it can significantly decrease anxiety & even fight depression. To read more on this click here.

  1. Yoga

The next time you are feeling completely overwhelmed try practising a gentle yoga sequence. Yoga is well known for reducing anxiety & stress. The focus on breath within the practice of yoga has been seen to reduce the release of stress hormones & lower cortisol levels. Ease into a gentle session & stretch out any tension in your body to help induce a soothing, calming effect in your body & mind.

  1. Journal

Find a quiet space & write your heart out. Journaling is a very therapeutic way of releasing pent up energy. Vent & get it all out so there is no need for any negative emotions to stay trapped inside of your body. Once you’re done, simply tear it up, release it & let it be done & over with.

  1. Gratitude

Write in a gratitude journal all the things you are grateful for, as many as you can. This will help shift your energy from negative to positive & allow for more positive energy to usher into your life.

  1. Affirmations

Repeat out loud in front of a mirror a releasing affirmation. This is very powerful practice, as you are signifying to the universe that you are ready to be free of this thing, situation or person. Repeat “I am willing to release the need for ……… insert what you need to release here …….”, & watch as whatever it is you need to release begins to leave your life.

Go soothe & nurture your mind, body & soul

  1. First of all, you need to find a place where you won’t be disturbed. If you live in a busy household investing in a lock on your door, a decent set of head phones or ear plugs is a great place to start!
  1. Next in your chosen space clear the clutter! This will eliminate old stagnant negative energies & allow for fresh new positive healing energy to flow through your special new healing space.

  1. Place a special rug & pillows on the floor to induce a state of comfort & nurturing.
  1. Next, set up an altar with spiritual objects to bring in the energy of spirituality. Each object can be placed with an intention for going deep within your heart and soul. Crystals are great for this.
  1. Creating your altar can be as simple as draping a small table with a special fabric. On top of the table, place items such as a scented candle, incense burner, essential oil diffuser, or natural objects like rocks and seashells that bring in the earth element.
  1. Add plants and flowers for energy, colour and increased oxygen. Lavender and purple symbolize spirituality, pink opens the heart, green brings in nature’s balance and yellow stimulates health. Read up on chakra colours & trust your inner guidance while choosing your colours.
  1. Hang pictures of gardens, mountains, angels, spiritual symbols, meaningful quotes & affirmations to impart a feeling of peace and harmony. There are many beautiful ones to choose from, pick the ones that sing to your soul.

Natural Beauty & Self-Care Guide

Looking your best doesn’t have to be expensive or unnatural. Here are 10 easy ways to get beautiful, naturally, right now!

1. Dry skin brush

Use a bristled brush and stroke your skin while still dry a few mornings a week before you shower. This simple morning routine increases circulation of lymph and blood and removes dead skin cells! You’ll get glowing, smooth and touch-worthy skin, guaranteed.

2. Sauna

Sweating is good for us and a dry sauna helps the body excrete toxins. The skin is one of the body’s elimination organs and when we allow it to breath by removing dead cells (dry skin brush) and sweat it can do its job a lot better.

3. Exercise

Get the blood flowing with some kind of exercise of your choice. It will bring colour to your skin and the increased amount of endorphins and confidence looks good on you! Include some exercises like Pilates or yoga for good posture. Hold your head high, be present and smile – you are beautiful!

4. Have sex

After an orgasm your body gets flooded with the feel-good hormone endorphin and growth hormones that make you look and feel young. That’s right – these hormones help wipe out damage from sun and stress. The deep breathing you experience during sex also increases your oxygen intake and decreases stress. So go forth!

5. Green Juice

A green juice is like a loaded liquid multi vitamin! Cucumber is hydrating, especially for your skin, and the greens are alkalizing and aid the body’s detoxification process. Try this as your one-a-day multi and see what happens.

6. Eat fat and make an oil change

We need god fats to maintain a skin that’s well hydrated – that stays plump, dewy and wrinkle free. Eat avocados, salmon, chia seeds, sardines and coconut oil and ditch the processed oils (canola, sunflower, corn, soy etc.) – they are much more likely to oxidize and cause inflammation in the body – and is therefor not a beatifying food at all.

7. Get a shower filter

Our body absorbs what we put on it –  and that goes for the water we bath and shower in too! There is added chlorine in all our tap water today. Chlorine dries out the skin and can even cause rashes and itchiness. Get a shower filter that filters out chlorine and other chemicals from you water. Your skin will thank you!

8. Lather your skin with oils

Avoid the toxic perfumes, parabens and additives and lather your skin up with 100% pure oils like coconut, jojoba, argan oil and Shea butter. Jojoba oil is especially great for oily skin as it help balance out the skins natural occurring oils.

9. Eat the rainbow

Fruit and vegetables with bright colours are also high in antioxidants that help fight free radicals in out body. Free radicals are a main source of aging for our skin and body, so beat it at the cause with natural foods, not with fillers and expensive topical magic potions.

10. Cut the sugar

By now you’ve probably heard that sugar is toxic and can lead to a range of chronic diseases. But it also causes inflammation, which make you age faster, cause wrinkles and even acne. Stick to fruits and sweet vegetables as your main sources of sweetness. (Bonus: you’ll get all those good antioxidants in too!

Go & embrace your beautiful self naturally!
